Nurses prescribing wound dressings
Article Abstract:
A study has shown that 55% of district nurses routinely prescribe health care products such as wound dressings and catheter products for patients. It is cheaper if nurses prescribe the dressings because they know better than doctors which ones to use and are able to monitor patients' usage, so there is less wastage. Patients can also get a prescription more quickly if a nurse can deal with it, rather than finding a doctor to do it. However, nurses are finding that there is considerable responsibility involved in prescribing, and they may need more training to feel confident about it.

From hospital to community
Article Abstract:
Hospital nurses will be actively involved in patient discharge planning for community care. Planning involves needs assessment and agreement with social services. Delays may result in bed blocking. In Trafford Health Authority, England named nurses will be responsible for initiating discharge assessment. In Swindon nurses will participate in discharge negociation between social workers and patients. At Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge nurses will be trained to conduct assessments. Many hospitals have prepared flow charts to assist discharge planning.

Front line battle for human rights
Article Abstract:
Nurses may often witness human rights abuses and Amnesty International has promoted the concept of health workers as witnesses of human rights abuses. However nurses may not have a thorough enough understanding of human rights and may become targets themselves. Medicins Sans Frontieres, a charity working throughout the world, provides a framework for nurses to speak out about abuses. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also works in conflict areas where human rights may be abused.
