Nurses who mean business: outside the NHS exists a world of insecurity, with even longer hours but greater rewards
Article Abstract:
There is growing interest from nurses in self employment and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is planning to launch guidelines for nurses keen to become self-employed. NHS reforms have changed the traditional nursing career structure and many middle managers and nurse teachers left to set up on their own. Nurses find they can earn more for the same job if they work through an agency and they are being snapped up by hard pressed hospitals. Nurses are also becoming independent nurse practitioners now that the White Paper on private care has given them the right to contract their services independently.

Healthy attitudes?
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom has seen a government drive to improve health education, but a survey of nurses found many used caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol to deal with their high stress levels. The nurses surveyed tended to be aware of what measures they should take to promote health, but were not always willing to do so, and believed this was also true for the public at large. The government set out its health education recommendations in Health of the Nation in 1992, and nurses believed the public was aware of the recommendations but that they had had little effect on behaviour.

A vote for the future
Article Abstract:
A survey of 14 nurses, health visitors and midwives from Epsom General Hospital, London, England and Govan Health Centre, Glasgow, Scotland aimed to establish interest in the United Kingdom Central Council elections. Twelve repondents intended to vote. Most appreciated the work of the Council but felt it was too dissociated from nursing practice. Several respondents thought fewer managers and more nurses should be represented. Several considered more effective communication would enhance its image.
