Nutrient quality of fat- and cholesterol-modified diets of children with hyperlipidemia
Article Abstract:
Low fat diets for children with high blood levels of fat and cholesterol may provide sufficient nutrition if children and their parents receive nutrition counseling. A study of 54 children with hyperlipidemia (high levels of fat in the blood) found that diets that were low in fat, cholesterol, and saturated fats, may have an equal energy value to unrestricted diets and equal or better nutritional value. Nutritional counseling may improve the energy and nutritional values of low fat diets by educating parents and children of the need for a well-balanced diet without excessive fat restrictions. Low fat, nutrient-dense foods, including low fat dairy foods, lean meats, and whole grains, may provide a nutritious modified diet.

Resumption of menses in anorexia nervosa
Article Abstract:
Menstruation return in anorexia nervosa patients appears to be associated with achieving near normal body weight and a threshold level of circulating estrogen. Researchers periodically measured body weight, percent body fat, and blood levels of female hormones for two years in 100 adolescent anorexia nervosa patients. Nearly 90% resumed menstruation within six months of achieving 90% of standard body weight. Regaining a fixed weight, height-to-weight ratio, and percent body fat bore no relationship to menstruation return. Patients with estrogen blood levels above 30 picograms per milliliter were 4.6 times more likely to experience return of menstruation.

Resumption of menses in anorexia nervosa: new research findings and their clinical implications
Article Abstract:
Return of menstruation in anorexia nervosa patients does not appear to depend on achieving a fixed body weight. Doctors want to know when menstruation will return because long-term low estrogen levels cause osteoporosis. They will want to prescribe hormones and calcium if return is unlikely in the near future. A recent study revealed that menstruation returned at different body weights, but increased blood levels of estrogen predicted its return. Even if this predicts return no more accurately than physical changes, it provides an objective measure that does not depend on patient report.
