Urine but not plasma nitric oxide metabolites are decreased in women with preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
Pregnant women with preeclampsia may produce less nitric oxide than normal pregnant women. Nitric oxide is produced by cells lining blood vessels and is known to relax blood vessels and inhibit blood clotting. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy involving high blood pressure and protein in the urine. Researchers analyzed plasma and urine samples from 14 preeclamptic women for the presence of nitrate and nitrite, byproducts of nitric oxide, and compared results to those of 20 normal pregnant women. Nitrate and nitrite levels in plasma were similar for both groups. Nitrate and nitrite levels were lower in urine from preeclamptic women than from normal women, suggesting that preeclamptic women produce less nitric oxide.

Evidence of endothelial activation and endothelial activators in cord blood of infants of preeclamptic women
Article Abstract:
Dysfunction of the lining of blood vessels may be found in the umbilical cords of infants born to preeclamptic mothers. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy marked by high blood pressure and potential seizures. Researchers analyzed blood samples from 17 pregnant women with or without preeclampsia and from their infants. Increased amounts of cellular fibronectin, a marker for dysfunction of the blood vessel lining, were found in preeclamptic mothers and their infants than in nonpregnant women or infants born to healthy mothers. Blood vessel lining dysfunction in preeclampsia may compromise fetal health.

Maternal plasma leptin is increased in preeclampsia and positively correlates with fetal cord concentration
Article Abstract:
Blood levels of the hormone leptin increase in pregnant women with preeclampsia compared to healthy pregnant women. Leptin regulates appetite and energy expenditure and may also regulate fetal growth.
