A new clinical option for hormone replacement therapy in women with secondary amenorrhea: effects of cyclic administration of progesterone from the sustained-release vaginal gel Crinone (4% and 8%) on endometrial morphologic features and withdrawal bleeding
Article Abstract:
A vaginal gel suppository containing Crinone appears to be effective as a hormone replacement for women with secondary amenorrhea. Amenorrhea is the cessation of the menstrual cycle before natural menopause and occurs in many female athletes. Researchers evaluated two dosages of Crinone, a synthetic form of progesterone, in 127 women with secondary amenorrhea. Endometrial biopsies showed that Crinone protected the endometrium against the adverse effects of estrogen, which all 127 women were also taking.

A comparative review of the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy regimens
Article Abstract:
The risks involved in the hormone replacement are stroke, coronary heart disease and breast cancer, whereas the benefits derived from it are reductions in fractures and colorectal cancer. The result indicates that the benefit/risk analysis that was reported in the women's health initiative can be generalized to all postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy products.
