Nutritional status of adult inpatients in Bujumbura, Burundi (impact of HIV infection)
Article Abstract:
There is a very high prevalence of malnutrition among adults admitted to the Dept of Internal Medicine of Bujumbura University Hospital, Burundi. This hospital is located in an area where HIV infection is extremely endemic. There is also a high HIV seroprevalence among these patients. It is clear that HIV infection plays a significant role in the development of malnutrition. Tuberculosis (TB) was a key cause of malnutrition among the study population, especially for HIV seropositive patients, and this indicates that malnourished patients should be screened for both TB and HIV infection.
