OH: the next 50 years
Article Abstract:
Issues which will determine the development of occupational health over the next 50 years will include improved predictive risk assessment, the growing role of research in improving understanding of occupational health matters and the constant need for up to date occupational ill health information, according to Jenny Bacon, HSE director general. Changes will also result from developments in the role of compensation, self-regulation and litigation. There is a strong business case for managing health risks, reducing the currently high costs of work-related ill health and accidents.

Atlantoaxial instability: what's next?
Article Abstract:
Physicians who care for children with Down's syndrome need to develop a consensus on the diagnosis and management of atlantoaxial instability (AAI), a complication which may put patients at risk for spinal cord compression. AAI is the result of ligament laxity and bony abnormalities in the cervical spine which causes excessive neck mobility. X-rays can be used in diagnosing the condition, but it is not yet clear which patients are likely to develop symptoms and may require neck protection measures.
