Birth weight and renal disease in Pima Indians with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Article Abstract:
Congenital retardation of renal development may increase the risk of renal disease, which may damage the kidney. In a study, the prevalence of urinary albumin excretion, which was determined in 308 Pima Indians with type 2 diabetes, was 63% in subjects with low birth weight. The results showed that the higher prevalence of elevated albuminuria in diabetic Pima Indians with high birth weight may be due to intrauterine diabetes exposure, while high prevalence in low birth weights may be due to the effects of intrauterine growth retardation.

Effect of youth-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus on incidence of end-stage renal disease and mortality in young and middle-aged Pima Indians
Article Abstract:
The impact of youth- and older-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus on the incidence of diabetic end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and mortality in Pima Indians is studied. It is observed that early-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with substantially increased incidence of ESRD and mortality in middle age, with these outcomes largely due to the longer duration of diabetes mellitus by middle age in individuals diagnosed younger than age 20 years.
