Community Needs Assessment and Morbidity Surveillance Following an Ice Storm--Maine, January 1998
Article Abstract:
An ice storm in Maine that knocked out power to an estimated 600,000 people illustrates the necessity for a rapid needs assessment to guide relief efforts. The storm struck on January 7, 1998, and on January 17, residents from 111 households in Norway were interviewed. Most had power and many others were using generators. However, three local emergency departments reported an increase in carbon monoxide poisoning from zero before the storm to 101 after. The number of patients treated during the period after the storm increased 47%, mostly from injuries, cold exposure, burns, and respiratory and heart disorders.

Surveillance for Acute Pesticide-Related Illness During the Medfly Eradication Program--Florida, 1998
Article Abstract:
Local communities should have advance warning when aerial pesticides are used so residents can stay indoors during the spraying. During the spring and summer of 1998, aerial malathion was used to control an outbreak of the Mediterranean fruit fly (MEDfly) in five Florida counties. A total of 123 people developed health problems directly related to malathion exposure. Local health officials should provide telephone hotlines and community meetings so residents can be forewarned of aerial pesticide use and can take appropriate measures to protect themselves.
