Article Abstract:

National Childbirth Trust (NCT) classes in parentcraft proved more effective than National Health Service provision for fathers-to-be. Poor management of the NHS class detracted from any potential benefit. A video explained home home births despite the unavailabilty of this service for new mothers. Potential fathers received little advice. In contrast the NCT offered a personal service. It recognised first-time parents' lack of knowledge and generated feelings of confidence and involvement.

Article Abstract:

The Nursing Times Ward Sisters' Conference recognises the need for new skills within a reformed United kingdom National Health Service. Many Ward Sisters are inadequately trained to undertake new responsibilities. Sisters require training in management skills such as establishing standards, measuring outcomes, quality assurance and interpersonal relations.

Clinical nurse managerial responsiblities necessitate additional training. The distinction between clinical practice and management should be reduced. The responsibilities of the clinical nurse manager should be defined. The imposition of managerial responsibility includes a right to appropriate training to fulfill the function effectively.
