Old flames, new desires
Article Abstract:
Nursing has achieved professional status and has degree-level training, a pay review body, and a career structure. However, having status is not the same as having power. Doctors are still dominant within the health service, and they can decide what nurses have to do. One solution is to recognize that by taking on the duties which junior doctors can no longer do, due to the reduction of their working hours, nurses can begin to negotiate for more recognition and status. Forging an alliance with doctors will give nurses more power and a louder voice.

Great expectations
Article Abstract:
UK nursing team leaders can find the seniority of their role causes conflict with lower ranking nurses who are concerned about the degree of authority a team leader may have. Job stress may have a long term affect on a team leader's personal and social life, often because of the long hours, job pressure and departmental internal politics involved in managing a team. Leaders do not want to appear incapable of coping with the job, although a more realistic approach to what can be achieved in the role would be beneficial for all concerned.
