A world of difference
Article Abstract:
The International Nurse Specialist Group/Cystic Fibrosis aims to make improvements in the treatment and care of cystic fibrosis sufferers by doing more research and developing guidelines on caring for sufferers with other conditions such as diabetes or who are pregnant. Services are not coordinated and this compromises the quality of care some sufferers receive. It is argued that this disease needs specially trained staff who can work together in a dedicated centre rather than being spread across the country. Better treatment for children could be available by 2004.

Breathing new life
Article Abstract:
A case study of lung transplantation in a cystic fybrosis patient is presented. Assessment of 19 year old patient Karen Albany at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, England in August, 1990 indicated the need for replacement lungs. The three hour operation took place in 1993. Post-operative nursing minimised infection risks. Signs of lung rejection were carefully monitored. The patient was discharged to the hospital flats on post-operative day 21.

Advances in the treatment of cystic fibrosis
Article Abstract:
The control of cystic fibrosis (CF) has for many years been based on treatment of infection, using antibiotics together with pancreatic replacement therapy and special diets. New treatments involve the use of deoxyribonuclease (DNase), an enzyme, and a human recombinant form of DNase which is free from foreign protein. It is able to quickly reduce viscous sputum to a fluid state and is claimed to improve breathing.
