Older and wiser
Article Abstract:
Evidence from two recently published reports shows that although many nurses are nearing retirement insufficient new nurses are being recruited. In 1995-96 only 4.1% of nurses were under 25 years old. By the year 2000, 25% of nurses will be 50 years old or over and able to take early retirement. To counter this some National Health Service Trusts have introduced incentives to encourage older nurses to stay at work, while others have used the situation to cut numbers in staffing levels. It is noted that an older person may be much more adept at the challenging role of being a nurse.

Charting progress
Article Abstract:
A review of the UK Patients's Chater one year after implementation in 1992 reveals some success. The named nurse strategy has improved hospital care. Operation waiting lists are less than two years. Accident and Emergency Unit waiting periods are shorter. However, some feel the pressure on nurses to attend more people in less time potentially stressful.
