Sulfasalazine revisited: a meta-analysis of 5-aminosalicylic acid in the treatment of ulcerative colitis
Article Abstract:
New preparations of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) may not be more effective than sulfasalazine for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is a disorder characterized by chronic, recurrent ulceration of the colon, or large intestine. A study examined studies in the medical literature that compared the effectiveness of 5-ASA preparations to that of a placebo, or an inactive substance, or sulfasalazine. Preparations of 5-ASA were more effective than a placebo for the treatment of active ulcerative colitis, but they were not more effective than sulfasalazine. Preparations of 5-ASA were also more effective than a placebo for maintenance of remission from ulcerative colitis, but they were less effective than sulfasalazine. Side effects experienced by patients treated with 5-ASA preparations were similar to those experienced by those who received a placebo or who were treated with sulfasalazine.

Epidemiology of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in a central Canadian province: a population-based study
Article Abstract:
The prevalence of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in the central Canadian province of Manitoba was validated based on administrative data. High incidence rates identified as 14.6/100,000 for Crohn's disease and 14.3/100,000 for ulcerative colitis between 1989-1994, indicates environmental risk factors that warrant further investigation.
