Simple low back pain: rest or active exercise?
Article Abstract:
The treatment of low back pain is controversial. The traditional viewpoint is that rest is the best treatment for low back pain. This is based on the idea that back pain arises from an injury to the spine. Movement and physical activity can aggravate this type of injury and increase the level of pain. Prolonged bed rest can create other types of problems for the patient. One of the most serious problems is severe disuse syndrome. The biopsychosocial model is an alternative treatment for chronic low back pain. This model involves an active exercise approach to treatment. An active exercise approach prevents the development of severe disuse syndrome. It also helps prevent the development of different psychosocial problems. Some medical researchers are still questioning the benefits of physical therapy for the treatment of low back pain. Development of a treatment strategy is very important. The number of individuals disabled by low back pain is reaching epidemic proportions in western societies.

Music related upper limb pain in schoolchildren
Article Abstract:
Pain in the upper limbs was shown to occur more frequently among children who played musical instruments than those who did not. The occurrence and characteristics of upper limb pain were evaluated among children attending a specialized music school and children attending a regular school. Female students reported pain more frequently than male students. Upper limb pain in the regular school was related to writing tasks, whereas in the music school, it was associated with playing all musical instruments, particularly the cello, clarinet, and flute. The intensity of practicing music was a more important factor in causing pain than the total number of hours spent practicing. The findings are consistent with results from similar studies in North America and Australia. The prevalence of pain is due to the overuse syndrome, which is common among musicians and writers. How effective is therapeutic ultrasound in the treatment of heel pain?
Article Abstract:
Standard ultrasound treatment does not appear to be any more effective than placebo treatment in patients with heel pain. Researchers compared the effectiveness of standard ultrasound treatment (study group) against placebo treatment (controls) in 19 patients with 26 painful heels who were not taking any pain medication. Only one of the seven patients receiving treatment to both feet had the same treatment given to both feet. Overall, the study group reported a 30% improvement in pain following standard ultrasound treatment while the control group reported a 25% improvement in pain following placebo treatment. Two patients in each group reported that the pain was worse after treatment. One patient in each group reported the pain remained the same after treatment. None of the patients in either group reported that the pain completely disappeared following treatment.
