Operations explained
Article Abstract:
Twenty patients undergoing prostate surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary were surveyed to establish their understanding of the operation. All indicated they would have read an information booklet. The hospital prepared a booklet explaining the operation and gave it to a similar sample of 20 patients. The second groups' responses to a questionaire revealed that the booklet had improved understanding. The survey indicates that verbal communication between patient and staff can be enhanced by supplementary written information.

Operations manager
Article Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus patients undergoing surgery require careful management to avoid complications. Good management will facilitate recovery and lessen risks of hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia and ketosis. Stable blood glucose levels are essential. Hospital admission should be about three days prior to surgery for adequate assessment. Early morning operations are most appropriate. Post-operative care encourages early mobility to lessen risks of pulmonary embolism and deep-vein thrombosis.
