Nutrition risks after a stroke
Article Abstract:
Impaired food intake can be a problem in people who have suffered a stroke or who have a physical or sensory impairment caused by neurological injury. Some patients can experience difficulties with mobility which reduce their ability to eat, while others are unable to communicate their meal preferences and others have problems with visualisation or perception of meal components. Recent research has identified the main causes of impaired food intake, but further long-term research is required in order to assess changes in nutritional status.

Nutrition and the elderly
Article Abstract:
Elderly people are highly susceptible to malnutrition, especially in institutional care where many health care professionals have limited knowledge about clinical nutrition. Elderly people can be effected by inadequate nutrition because of low incomes, mobility problems or the aging process which can limit absorbtion of nutrients or prevent food being digested effectively. Health care professionals need to have a greater understanding of how nutrition effects the body and how elderly people can be helped to improve their daily intake.

Serving suggestions: A ward sister, a doctor and a dietitian share their personal and professional views on nutrition
Article Abstract:
A ward sister describes the difficulties involved with mealtimes, when often there are insufficient staff to be able to support and feed patients at their own pace. Hospitals often do not permit their staff to provide snacks, and malnourished patients can develop complications, requiring longer hospitalization. Nurses should assess the patient's initial nutritional states, highlight risk factors, and liaise with the catering department.
