Osteoporosis: learning together
Article Abstract:
Staff at an osteoporosis clinic run by Forest Healthcare National Health Service Trust in Essex, England, have seen positive results from creating a patient education programme and linked advice group. It was initially decided to focus on patients with a specific problem, with these groups providing valuable feedback. With the cooperation of professionals such as physiotherapists and rheumatologists, it was possible to provide advice on pain relief, posture, diet and exercise. It has been established that benefits may be gained from focusing on pre-menopausal women.

Tackling the problem of fragile and thinning bones
Article Abstract:
A more structured approach that involves the complete clinical management of patients suffering from osteoporosis, many of whom will be seen by the specialist nurse and not a doctor is discussed. For those patients who cannot tolerate the oral preparations or those who forget to take them, the new IV bisphosphonate therapy is suggested which is very rapid and does not involve staying in hospital for hours.
