Out of darkness
Article Abstract:
Three nurses who work with women with gynaecological cancers describe patients' reactions to a cancer diagnosis, the fears the women have, and the factors which prevent them getting an early diagnosis. Patients often express despair at their lack of awareness of the cancer inside them. They might need advice to help them choose between therapies. They might be angry, or need to express grief, but nurses should be aware that a cancer diagnosis will have different effects in different people. Media reports often help dispel cancer myths, but they can also create confusion or fear.

Travelling the high road
Article Abstract:
A nurse working in a remote Scottish region has to be a midwife and health visitor as well as a nurse. She feels that the triple-role works well because there is not enough work for another person and the local people know and confide in her. The nurse had experience of midwifery in Newfoundland, Canada, and Africa before working in Scotland so she is used to shouldering responsibility for her decisions. The nurse also works as a practice nurse for a local doctor and is training to carry out cervical screening. She often drives 100 miles in one day.
