Outbreak of leptospirosis among white-water rafters - Costa Rica, 1996
Article Abstract:
Several people became ill with leptospirosis after a white-water rafting trip in Costa Rica. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection. Out of 26 people on the trip, nine were eventually diagnosed with leptospirosis. Many had fallen into the river or had ingested river water. Three required no treatment but six needed antibiotics and two were hospitalized. Blood samples from five tested positive for Leptospira, the bacterium that causes the disease. This bacterium occurs in soil and can be washed into rivers during flooding.
