Outcome of twin gestations with a single anomalous fetus
Article Abstract:
Major birth defects in one twin appear to increase the risk of premature delivery but do not seem to affect the health of the other twin. Birth profiles of 970 twin pregnancies were analyzed. Eighteen sets had one twin with a major birth defect, 38 sets had one twin with a minor birth defect, and 914 sets had no birth defects. Twin sets with a major birth defect weighed less, were born sooner, and stayed in the hospital longer. The healthy infants in the major birth defect pairs were not at increased risk for complications or death. Birth profiles for the sets with minor birth defects and no defects were similar.

Birth weight discordancy and adverse perinatal outcomes among twin gestations in the United States: the effect of placental abruption
Article Abstract:
Twin fetuses who have different body weights have an increased risk of being born prematurely and even stillborn, according to a study of 269,287 twin pregnancies. The risk is even greater if the placenta has partially or completely detached from the uterus before delivery. The greatest risk occurs if the body weights differ by 15% or more in same sex twins and 30% or more in different sex twins. However, even a difference of 5% or less confers a high risk if the placenta has detached.

Placental abruption in the United States, 1979 through 2001: Temporal trends and potential determinants
Article Abstract:
The study evaluates temporal trends in abruption risk and assesses how much underlying changes in the clinical determinants might have affected these trends. The temporal increase in rates of abruption might reflect a true increase in risk or might be the result of improved diagnosis of both abruption and its determinants.
