Surgeon General nominee Joycelyn Elders, a physician, is facing scrutiny during her confirmation hearings because of her controversial views on public health. For example, she advocates increased AIDS testing and counseling and the distribution of condoms. In addition, she plans to increase immunization rates for small children and improve access to health care for rural populations. Her supporters include the American Medical Assn.

Stage is set for early vote on Dr. Elders nomination

The US Senate may vote in early September 1993 on the nomination of physician Joycelyn Elders to be surgeon general. Some senators have criticized Elders for her controversial stands on abortion and condom distribution to teenagers. However, others have hailed her as a tough, outspoken advocate for public health. Elders is a pediatric researcher and the former head of the Arkansas State Dept of Health.
