Studies weigh market impact on academic practices
Article Abstract:
Academic medical centers are relying more heavily on patient care for revenue, according to studies released by physicians and the Medical Group Management Association. Patient care accounted for 57% of medical center revenues in 1995 compared to 53% in 1992, according to the 'Academic Practice Management Survey: 1996 Report Based on 1995 Data.' Academic health centers are increasing sales of clinical services to private and government purchasers and reducing costs of clinical and nonclinical services to increase revenues.

Humana considers reorganization into two companies
Article Abstract:
Humana Inc may separate its hospital business from the managed care enterprises because savings expected from the combination have not materialized. According to analysts, doctors employed by Humana may have vented their objections to managed care by sending fewer patients to Humana hospitals. In the third quarter ending May 31, 1992, income for the hospitals declined to $151 million, compared to $192 million for the same period of 1991. Humana health plans income was $22 million, 12% lower than the previous year.

Putting the brakes on physician supply
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has published a report that recommends that graduate medical education be scaled back because of the increasing physician surplus. Specifically, IOM recommends decreasing the number of residency spaces, reducing class sizes and the number of medical schools. The growth of managed care is the main reason for the surplus, as the need for as many doctors has decreased.
