Own goal in the European league
Article Abstract:
Cancer survival rates in the United Kingdom (UK) are worse than in Europe, with at least 10,000 extra people dying in the UK each year. Europe adopted a specialist multidisciplinary approach to cancer care but the UK did not because it preferred to allow all hospitals to deal with cancer patients. Some parts of the UK have now begun to develop specialist centres but others have not. There is also a shortage of oncologists. A British oncologist can see 500 new patients annually compared to 75 in Norway or 100 in Belgium. There is also not enough money put into training specialists.

Measuring change in the new NHS
Article Abstract:
The Kings Fund Promoting Action on Clinical Effectiveness programme looked at methods of measuring the impact of clinical effectiveness programmes within the UK National Health Service. It examined how initiatives were put in place rather than the results of the programmes. The task of evaluating clinical effectiveness requires finding comparative data, ensuring data is collected correctly and identifying a baseline to measure change. The Kings Fund noted it was vital to work out how altering the processes would effect health outcomes.

Clinical view
Article Abstract:
A group for victims of Alzheimer's Disease and vascular dementia and their carers at Windermere Day Hospital, UK, resulted in greater confidence among patients and a greater ability to cope after just six weekly sessions. The manager of the hospital, which is an assessment unit for elderly people with mental illness, and a clinical psychologist established the memory group because sufferers and carers lacked support.
