PPOs, access, oversight among medical societies' concerns
Article Abstract:
The issues of primary concern to medical associations in TN, AL and MO are preferred provider organizations (PPOs), health care access and state oversight. The Tennessee Medical Association has asked PPOs to provide participating physicians with 90-day notification before dropping the latter from their lists. The Medical Assn of Alabama has endorsed legislation that would provide the uninsured with increased access to health care. The Missouri State Medical Assn has charged the state Board of Registration for the Healing Arts with excessive oversight of physicians.

How to prevent drug abuse in pregnancy
Article Abstract:
The deleterious effects of perinatal alcohol and drug abuse are well-documented, but remedies to the problem are still in short supply. One major policy issue remains unresolved: should treatment address substance abuse or prenatal care, or both? Physicians should play a leadership role in addressing this issue. They should monitor pregnant women for drug abuse and should help set up treatment and outreach programs. The federal government must demonstrate a commitment to fund these programs.

AIDS 'out of control,' will strike everywhere
Article Abstract:
A Harvard University study on the AIDS epidemic estimates many more present cases of AIDS and HIV infection than World Health Organization (WHO) figures and offers a much grimmer prediction for the year 2000. The forecast states that no area in the world will be safe and that as many as 120 million people may have the HIV virus by the next century. The report calls for a new global strategy, which the WHO claims it has already adopted.
