PUMA-G and HM74 are receptors for nicotinic acid and mediate its anti-lipolytic effect
Article Abstract:
The G-protein-coupled receptor, 'protein upregulated in macrophages by interferon-gamma (PUMA-G, human HM74) is a nicotinic acid (niacin) receptor and is expressed in adipose tissue. Research indicate that PUMA-G is involved in the anti-lipolytic and lipid-lowering effects of niacin as revealed by the niacin-induced decrease in freee fatty acid and triglyceride plasma levels are abrogated in the absence of PUMA-G.

Cholesterol esters and atherosclerosis - a game of ACAT and mouse
Article Abstract:
Research on acylCoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT2) in mice indicates that this cholesterol-modifying enzyme may be useful in preventing atherosclerosis. Findings show that by disrupting the gene that encodes ACAT2, researchers can reduce cholesterol absorption capacity and increase resistance to dietary hypercholesterolemia.

Uncoupling diet and diabetes
Article Abstract:
Research demonstrates that a protein associated with the adipose tissue raises the metabolic rate of the body aiding in the reduction of obesity and enhancing insulin sensitivity in transgenic mice. Data suggest that pharmacological drugs designed to mimic this will be helpful in treating obesity and diabetes.
