Pa. OKs Blues merger; medical groups sue to block it
Article Abstract:
Physicians groups are protesting the merger between Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Blue Shield. The Philadelphia County Medical Society and Pennsylvania Society of Internal Medicine filed a lawsuit on Dec 5, 1996, requesting an injunction to block the merger; the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court directed the medical groups to first approach the state insurance department. Physicians groups claim the merger will jeopardize the Blues' social mission and negatively affect competition in the local market.

Medicine embraces competition but struggles over impact
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) House of Delegates, meeting in Jun 1995, agreed to proposals that call for market-based healthcare, Medicare solvency, and a balanced federal budget. The delegates strongly disagreed, however, on how the association should respond to free-market pressures, such as managed care, that are already impacting physicians' incomes. The AMA's adopted positions on point-of-service requirements, unilateral payment cuts, and other issues are discussed.
