Panel OKs Dr. Foster, but full Senate passage in doubt
Article Abstract:
The nomination of Henry W. Foster Jr. to the post of US Surgeon General was approved by the Labor and Human Resources Committee of the Senate with the support of two Republicans, Bill Frist of Tennessee, who is a physician, and James M. Jeffords of Vermont. The nomination goes to the full Senate, where opponents of abortion will lobby against Foster, an obstetrician who performed a number of therapeutic abortions. The problem of unintended pregnancies in the US constitutes a serious health hazard.

On the block for a change: National Health Service Corps
Article Abstract:
Congress is in the process of severely cutting the National Health Service Corps' (NHSC) funding. The program helps finance medical clinicians' education, in return for the clinicians' agreement to serve in inner-city or frontier areas. But according to a House document, the program has not discernably improved the supply of physicians in rural areas. Proponents claim that the NHSC should not be blamed for shortages of health professionals.

Dr. Foster tries to 'set the record straight' at hearing
Article Abstract:
Surgeon general nominee Henry W. Foster Jr. gamely defended himself at a Senate confirmation hearing, but his confirmation remained problematic. Labor & Human Resources Committee members questioned Foster's record on abortion and other matters, but the Tennessee doctor, an obstetrician-gynecologist, insisted that he has devoted his career to delivering healthy, wanted babies into the world.
