Pace of federal health fraud prosecutions quickens
Article Abstract:
Attorney General Janet Reno special counsel Debra Cohn noted that there are almost 2,000 medical fraud cases currently in federal courts, at a conference on the subject. The number, which is double those investigated in fiscal 1993, reflects the government's more stringent approach towards health fraud. Since 1993 to date, the number of cases filed has risen 200% in criminal courts and 100% in civil courts. The new Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act provides more federal funds to fight fraud.
