Paralytic poliomyelitis - United States, 1980-1994
Article Abstract:
The new polio vaccine schedule should significantly reduce the incidence of polio in children who are vaccinated. Vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) still occurs in some vaccinated children. Between 1980 and 1994, 125 cases of VAPP occurred in the US. Seventy-eight percent of the cases occurred in children who had received their first or second dose of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). The estimated risk of VAPP was one case for every 750,000 children vaccinated. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends using an inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) for the first two doses followed by the OPV for the last two doses.

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication - Bangladesh, 1995-1997
Article Abstract:
Bangladesh has made significant progress in eradicating polio but more effort is needed. Between 1985 and 1990, vaccination of children under the age of 12 months increased from 2% to 100%. The nation held National Immunization Days twice a year between 1995 and 1997. The number of reported cases of polio dropped from 520 in 1988 to 97 by 1996. However, the nation's goal of eradicating polio in the year 2000 may require additional efforts, including accreditation of its National Polio Laboratory by the World Health Organization.

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication - Turkey, 1994-1997
Article Abstract:
Turkey is making considerable progress in its goal to eradicate polio. During 1994-1997, less than 80% of children were vaccinated against polio in many Turkish provinces. Turkey conducted National Immunization Days in 1995, 1996 and 1997 and several "mop-up" vaccination campaigns. The number of polio cases has declined since 1994, but six cases in 1997 made Turkey the only country in Europe that year with documented wild poliovirus transmission. Turkey will hold another National Immunization Day in the Spring of 1998.
