Self-care activities of women infected with human immunodeficiency virus
Article Abstract:
A holistic approach including alternative medical care can be useful in the treatment of female HIV patients. This alternative medical care can include treatments such as nutrition, exercise, yoga and massage. Using self-prescribed therapies seems to go along with taking control of other aspects of one's life as patients who previously used alcohol or illegal drugs stopped such behavior. A group of 184 HIV positive patients being cared for on an outpatient basis and also using self-prescribed therapies was studied. The group was all African-American women living in the South. The study showed the connection between attitudes about health care and cultural norms.

Attitudes, concerns, and fear of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome among registered nurses in the United States
Article Abstract:
Other diseases can stigmatize patients but do not approach the negative emotional response triggered by AIDS. Attitudes of society, the media and even other AIDS patients are evidence of the extent and seriousness of AIDS stigmatization. Education programs provide no guarantee of change but do improve negative attitudes. Moreover, AIDS education has proven effective in preventing spread of the disease. A study of nurses' attitudes and fear of AIDS patients showed that nurses less sympathetic toward gays had more fear of contracting the disease through caring for AIDS patients. Other results are discussed.

Going home: African-American caregiving for adult children with human immunodeficiency virus disease
Article Abstract:
The caregiving literature concentrates on European-American caregivers caring for spouses or parents with Alzheimer's disease. Such research has neglected ethnographic aspects and caregivers of patients suffering from other diseases. A study of 8 African-American mothers of adult HIV patients showed the importance they gave to spiritual support and their belief that life, illness and death are ultimately God's will, Health care professionals must be sensitive to patients' religious beliefs and practice culturally appropriate medicine.
