Paricalcitol as compared with calcitriol in patients undergoing hemodialysis
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to determine which form of vitamin D is best for patients with chronic kidney disease. Chronic kidney disease can cause an overstimulation of the parathyroid glands, which can be prevented by vitamin D derivatives. Two such drugs are paricalcitol and calcitriol, and a study published in 2003 found that paricalcitol might be better than calcitriol.

Survival of patients undergoing hemodialysis with paricalcitol or calcitriol therapy
Article Abstract:
Paricalcitol may be better than calcitriol for prolonging the life of hemodialysis patients, according to a study of 67,399 patients. Both of these drugs are injectable forms of vitamin D, which are given to hemodialysis patients to treat overactive parathyroid glands. Patients who received paricalcitol had 16% lower mortality rates than those who received calcitriol.
