Hyperimmunoglobulin therapy for a twin fetus with cytomegalovirus infection and growth restriction
Article Abstract:
Immunoglobulin therapy may be effective in treating cytomegalovirus infection in fetuses. Doctors used this treatment on a woman pregnant with twins who contracted cytomegalovirus infection while she was pregnant. Ultrasound scans showed that one of the twins had stopped growing. She was given cytomegalovirus-specific immunoglobulin intravenously for three days and immunoglobulin was also injected into the amniotic sac of the affected fetus. A few weeks later, this twin began growing again. About nine months after birth, both twins consistently tested negative for cytomegalovirus.
