Pathology and laboratory medicine
Article Abstract:
The swift identification of several newly emerging infectious diseases was a direct result of the examination of autopsy specimens. The outbreak of Hantavirus in New Mexico in 1993 was first identified by forensic pathologists. Analysis of archived autopsy samples revealed that the viral disease existed long before the 1993 outbreak. A species of microsporidia that could cause outbreaks of respiratory disease was first identified by a pathologist from autopsy samples from an AIDS patient. When the Ebola virus struck in Zaire in 1995, autopsy samples were crucial in determining the pathogenicity of the virus. Pathologists are so concerned about free access to archived autopsy samples, they have proposed changing the autopsy process. A simple polymerase chain reaction test for protein C resistance was developed when molecular biologists discovered that a defect in factor V prevents it from binding to protein C.

Recognition of Illness Associated With the Intentional Release of a Biologic Agent
Article Abstract:
The symptoms of many biological weapons are described so doctors and public health officials can quickly identify a possible bioterrorist attack. Potential biological weapons include anthrax, plague, botulism, smallpox, inhalational tularemia, and viruses that cause hemorrhagic fever such as Ebola or Marburg.
