Patterns of condom use and sexual behavior among never-married women

Article Abstract:

Consistent use of condoms may be low among never-married women who are sexually active. Efforts should be made to educate single women on the use of condoms to prevent different types of sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Among 1,887 never-married women over 15 years old, 41% used condoms, 32% used condoms consistently, 45% had stopped using condoms and 26% initiated consistent condom use. Condom use varied depending on a woman's age, education, race and socioeconomic group. Women who used condoms to prevent STDs were more likely to use them consistently than women who used them to prevent pregnancy. They were also more likely to initiate consistent condom use and less likely to stop using condoms.

Article Abstract:

Nonmonogamous black and Hispanic youth are more likely to have begun sexual activity earlier in life, and are more likely to use alcohol and marijuana. Researchers surveyed a large group of sexually-active young people from 15 to 24 years of age. Monogamy was most often practiced by Hispanic female. Monogamous sex was often unprotected by condom use. Youth practicing serial monogamy most commonly used condoms during their last sexual encounter. Oral and anal intercourse were most common among nonmonogamous youth.

Condom Use in Young Blacks and Hispanics in Public STD Clinics

Article Abstract:

Many young blacks and Hispanics do not use condoms during sex, which places them at risk of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). In a survey of 376 patients seen at an STD clinic, condom use ranged from 40% among Hispanic women to 48% among black men. People who habitually carried condoms were most likely to use them. Communication between partners was also associated with condom use.
