Pediatric human immunodeficiency virus infection: recent evidence on the utilization and costs of health services
Article Abstract:
The cost of treating HIV-infected children appears to be dropping. Researchers analyzed the use of health care resources and their associated costs in eight clinics serving pediatric HIV patients in five communities. Overall, 141 children were surveyed between 1991 and 1992. Children were either HIV positive and older than 15 months or were any age and had AIDS. Children with AIDS spent an average of 10.6 days in the hospital, compared to hospital stays of 14 to 20 days in studies done in the late 1980s. The children used more oupatient and home health care services. The average cost of treating children with AIDS was $37,928 per year and the average cost for HIV-infected children was $9,382. This is significantly less than treatment costs in the late 1980s.

Racial and gender disparities in receipt of highly active antiretroviral therapy persist in a multistate sample of HIV patients in 2001
Article Abstract:
A study is done to examine whether demographic disparities in the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) persist in 2001 and if outpatient care is associated with HAART utilization. An attempt to increase access to care and frequency of outpatient visits for underutilizing groups as well as increased efforts to reduce persistent disparities in women, African Americans and injection drug users was suggested.
