Henoch-Schonlein purpura in a child at risk of abuse
Article Abstract:
Physicians must learn about the medical conditions that can mimic child abuse. Physicians report the case of a 3-year-old girl who was brought to the hospital by her aunt because she had bruises on her buttocks and legs. The child's mother had a history of substance abuse and lived with her boyfriend. Child abuse was suspected and she was placed in the custody of her aunt. During that time she developed new bruises and was hospitalized again. Her physicians continued to suspect child abuse but biopsies of her skin revealed that she had Henoch-Schonlein purpura, a bleeding disorder.

Violence exposure and emotional trauma as contributors to adolescents' violent behaviors
Article Abstract:
Physicians need to identify teenagers who are at high risk of violent behavior by assessing whether they have been exposed to violence. Researchers questioned 3,735 high school students about exposure to violence, emotional trauma and violent behavior. Exposure to violence was linked to 26% of violent behaviors in males and 22% in females. When emotional trauma was added, together they accounted for half of all violent behaviors. Anger was the most important emotion predicting violent behavior.
