Performance improvement just got easier
Article Abstract:
Dependable performance indicators are essential to reliably measure health care quality. The US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research's Quality Measurement Network and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' National Library of Healthcare Indicators are two new resources for performance indicator data. Other sources of information on indicators and their reliability are the nursing and medical literature, databases, groups that set medical and nursing care standards, healthcare delivery organizations and insurance companies, and colleagues and professional organizations.

Linking the pieces of performance improvement
Article Abstract:
Organizations using more than one type of performance improvement activity need to take steps to connect the activities in order to improve performance and efficiency. Assemble all those in charge of improvement activities to discuss how the various approaches are related, how well they work, and how they can be utilized together to decrease repetitiveness and increase goal attainment. Abandon unproductive activities and recognize areas that are currently being overlooked.

Bringing clinical pathways to life
Article Abstract:
Clinical pathways are specific descriptions of the day-to-day care provided patients. These pathways are being used as a measure of a health-care organization's value but, unless they are used, they will have no impact. Therefore, they need to be used as a guide to improve care and need to be applied consistently. A list of what the clinical pathway should and should not be for specific issues is included.
