Preface
Article Abstract:
The national and international nutrition scientists in Sarajevo during the war faced problems due to the lack of scientific equipment and electricity. New techniques and data on nutrition were also not available as research on nutrition had not been extensive before the war. The blockade in Sarajevo was not absolute, as the UN and other organizations gave aid, partly in the form of food. However, during war it is difficult for the agencies to know correctly which areas require food urgently. Some data comes from the World Health Organization's attempt to provide objective information to relief agencies.

Introduction
Article Abstract:
The price of food increased sharply due to scarcity during the 1992-94 siege of Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most of the land and even flower pots in Sarajevo were converted into plots to grow food. However since land was scarce, the population relied mainly on international food aid from the World Food Programme and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Papers on the research conducted by nutrition scientists on the effect of food scarcity on nutritional health were presented in the Nutrition Seminar held in Sarajevo in 1994 and have been published in this supplement.

Micronutrient status of the besieged residents of Sarajevo: May 1993
Article Abstract:
Inadequate levels of a number of essential micronutrients were found in residents of Sarajevo in a May 1993 study. An analysis of the blood and serum of 202 individuals in Sarajevo during the siege shows that the levels of haemoglobin, ferritin, iron, folate and vitamin D in some of these individuals were dangerously low. Low serum levels of beta-carotene and folate were probably due to the lack of green vegetables in the food aid provided. However protein-energy undernourishment was not observed.
