Perioperative introductory column
Article Abstract:
Operating room nurses may need to adapt to new technological advances in surgery. Surgeons have appropriated technological developments in non-medical fields for use in the operating room. Both surgical procedures, such as use of bone growth factor, and surgical equipment, such as creation of self-retaining retractors, are changing. Hospitals may let go of OR managers to trim costs. OR nurses should update their education to remain employable and to view technology developments positively.

Mini-coronary artery bypass grafting
Article Abstract:
An alternative to traditional heart bypass surgery called mini-coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) appears promising. The mini-CABG procedure is performed through small cuts in the chest rather than opening the entire chest wall. Use of this technology has resulted in fewer complications and shorter hospital stays. The effect on personnel numbers both within the operating room and on the hospital floor will be likely.

Using competency-based education in the perioperative setting
Article Abstract:
Operating room nursing standards can be clearly defined when nursing administrators use competency-based education. Since the basic nursing curriculum no longer includes perioperative skills or theory, nursing staff can be trained through a competency-based program that gives them credit for previous knowledge. Self-directed techniques provide for the greatest flexibility and cost-efficiency.
