Physicians' Ethical Obligations Regarding Alternative Medicine
Article Abstract:
The rising popularity of alternative medical therapies obligates physicians to inquire about their use, evaluate these treatments, and help their patients safely use alternative practitioners, if they desire. Many patients use non-traditional dietary supplements, herbal preparations, and alternative therapies, and they are often reluctant to disclose this to their doctor. If only to avoid drug interactions with herbal preparations, physicians should explicitly ask about these products when interviewing patients. Physicians, even with limited knowledge, can guide patients in using alternative remedies, particularly in cautioning patients not to chose alternative therapies over proven treatments for serious conditions.
