Successful pregnancy in a patient with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome
Article Abstract:
The case report is presented of a successful pregnancy in a female patient with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, a genetic condition characterized mainly by abnormalities of the eyes, the skin of scalp and face, and the bones of the head and face. Patients with this disorder usually have normal intelligence. The patient, who was considered to be of normal intelligence, had high blood pressure, glaucoma, and a history of extensive corrective surgery. On examination, an abnormality of the uterus was also discovered. The patient underwent artificial insemination with donor sperm and became pregnant. A genetically normal infant was delivered by cesarean section. The case is unusual in that the patient also had abnormalities of the reproductive tract. Only two other patients with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, of 70 described, have had successful pregnancies. Women with this disorder should receive counseling regarding their reproductive potential. An assessment of the value of ultrasonographic screening for endometrial disease in postmenopausal women without symptoms
Article Abstract:
Transvaginal ultrasound scans are not effective in detecting endometrial disease in women who have no symptoms, according to a study of 1,926 women. Among 1,750 women who had thicker than normal endometrium and had a biopsy, only one case of endometrial cancer was found. During a transvaginal ultrasound scan, the ultrasound probe is placed inside the vagina.
