Physicians gain seats in House; Medicaid, pot initiatives pass; managed care rules fail
Article Abstract:
The 1996 national elections resulted in several interesting outcomes involving physicians and medical care. Several physicians, or their spouses, were elected to the House of Representatives. Dr. Howard Dean was able to retain office as the governor of Vermont. Ballot initiatives passed in Arizona and California legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Eligibility requirements for Medicaid were significantly altered in Arizona and Oregon resulting in more low-income patients meeting qualifications. Initiatives to control HMOs failed in California.

Why are there still so few minorities in medicine?
Article Abstract:
The proportion of African-American, Native American and Hispanic-American physicians has not increased in the past few decades. Admissions of these groups to medical schools has remained roughly the same since the 1970s. In contrast, the proportion of women and Asian-Americans has increased dramatically. Although medical schools cite deficient early preparation as the reason that they reject many minority candidates, experts believe that the admissions process, with its reliance on standardized tests, may favor some races over others.
