Many physicians volunteer their time or even change the direction of their professional careers to help fight the AIDS epidemic. For example, Andrew Zysman an emergency room physician, volunteers with the treatment and research activist group ACT-UP Golden Gate. Under ACT-UP's auspices, he works with the federal AIDS Clinical Trial Group on clinical trial design and oncology issues. Alvin Novick switched from researching the neurology of bats to co-founding AIDS Project/New Haven, a service organization, and serving on the Food and Drug Administration's antiviral advisory committee.

Despite treatment gains, MD sees a new generation at risk of impairment

Ralph Crawshaw, chairman of the American Medical Association's Fifth National Conference on the Impaired Physician, feels that there are many types of impairments that physicians could have:drug abuse, alcoholism, psychiatric problems, senility. There is also another impairment that has not been discussed very much, the uncontrolled desire for money and power. There are treatment procedures for all these impairments and rehabilitation is being aided by impaired physician programs throughout the United States.

Conference explores how to deal with cocaine
Article Abstract:
Cocaine abuse is the topic of a conference sponsored by the Health Sciences at University of California at Los Angeles. The physiological effects of cocaine create a drug dependency that is difficult to change. The price of cocaine is sufficiently high so that the use will eventually decrease.
