Placental metastasis from primary ocular melanoma: a case report
Article Abstract:
Cancer of the eye may spread to the placenta during pregnancy if the cancer is pervasive, and may even metastasize to the developing fetus. A 31-year-old woman had her right eye removed because of a malignant melanoma. She sought medical care a year later when 36 weeks pregnant because of pain in the right side and lower back. The cancer was found to have metastasized to the liver. The decision was made to induce labor since the fetus's lungs were found to be mature. Microscopic examination of the placenta revealed cancer had metastasized into it. No evidence of cancer was found in the infant. The mother died three weeks later of massive blood clots. Women treated for melanoma cancer should be counseled not to become pregnant for at least three years, as recurrence is most likely during that time.

Annexin V is critical in the maintenance of murine placental integrity
Article Abstract:
A protein called Annexin V appears to be necessary for maintaining the placenta. Annexin V is a naturally occurring anticoagulant in the body. In a study on pregnant mice, researchers found that annexin V occurred on the placenta, and antibodies against annexin V led to blood clotting and fetal loss. This indicates that pregnant women who have repeated miscarriages may be producing antibodies against annexin V.

Malignant melanoma of the ovary and exposure to clomiphene citrate: a case report and review of the literature
Article Abstract:
The case of a 34-year-old woman who took the fertility drug clomiphene illustrates the risk that this drug may increase the risk of melanoma. She had melanoma of the ovary, which is very rare. It may have spread from a mole that had been removed 15 years before.
