Plasma vitamins A and E and red blood cell fatty acid profile in newborns and their mothers
Article Abstract:
The plasma vitamin A and E levels and the fatty acids of red blood cells in mothers are related to those of newborns. Maternal plasma vitamin E and A levels, vitamin E/total lipid, and red blood cell components phospholipid linoleate and oleate, are greater than those of the neonates. The arachidonate and stearate components of red blood cells are greater in the cord than in the maternal blood. The maternal nutrient levels may affect the nutritional status of newborns. The differences in the levels of these nutrients at the first trimester and the delivery stage are presented.

Arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids are strongly associated in maternal and neonatal blood
Article Abstract:
A new study investigates the link between blood phosphoglyceride arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA) in pregnant women and newborn babies. The study of healthy British and Korean mothers shows significant associations between AA and DHA in the phosphoglycerides of the red cell membrane. This is a surprising find if the red cell composition is diet-determined. Such results suggest a physiological regulatory mechanism maintaining the AA and DHA composition of red cell membranes.
