Playing the managed care game: on the offense; state medical societies want doctors to captain provider teams
Article Abstract:
State medical societies are forming physician networks to give physicians some leverage in a competitive health care market that includes health maintenance organizations and other large buyers of provider services. Eventually, these networks may include hospitals, pharmacies and other providers. The networks will negotiate contracts with insurance companies, large employers and health maintenance organizations. The Medical Society of the State of New York and the South Carolina Medical Assn are among the groups organizing networks. However, state medical societies have a poor record in organizing such systems.

N.Y. doctor's imprisonment for clinical crime delayed
Article Abstract:
A US federal judge has scheduled a hearing on Dr Gerald Einaugler's appeal of his conviction for reckless endangerment of a patient's life. Several state medical societies and the American Medical Assn support Einaugler, but the New York State Supreme Court rejected his appeal. The Einaugler case is a rare example of a criminal challenge to a physician's clinical judgement and it is the result of a nursing home patient's death in 1990. Einaugler admitted his original mistake when treating the patient, but denied the gross negligence charges.
