Politics of pay
Article Abstract:
Nurses pay is far below that of other occupations of similar stature causing a problem in recruiting and retaining suitable candidates. The review body has not yet decided on next year's pay rise possibly due to the forthcoming general election. Local pay awards have not been a success with 100 trusts failing to make any award to nurses during 1996. Unions may decide to wait to negotiate in the hope that a newly elected Labour government would be more generous to nurses.

Happy endings
Article Abstract:
UK nurses can choose between a variety of pension schemes. The NHS scheme is highly regarded for a range of reasons, and the fact that practice nurses have campaigned to be able to join it illustrates its popularity. The Royal National Pension Fund for Nurses is an option for nurses unable to join the NHS scheme, or a nurse may opt for a personal pension plan offered by one of the financial institutions.

Unison joins legal battle over pensions
Article Abstract:
Nurses' union Unison is planning to take legal action against large life insurance companies which are accused of mis-advising nurses to leave the NHS pension scheme.
