The Department of TransportationEs annual release of highway statistics proclaimed a decrease in the rate of fatal accidents per mile. It has been perceived by many as a means to gain electoral advantage by the Bush administration. The political intervention into the domain of accident statistics is criticized.

Article presents an overview of demographics, safety statistics and concerns of the utilities industry. Accordingly, the industry employees over 700,000 Americans and features relatively low incident rates as far as work-related injuries and fatalities. 318 fatalities occured in the sector in the year 2000.
