Blood pressure control, proteinuria, and the progression of renal disease: the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study
Article Abstract:
A targeted blood pressure that is lower than current recommendations may help to slow the progression of kidney disease in patients with proteinuria. Proteinuria is a condition characterized by excessive blood proteins in the urine. Doctors evaluated the effects on kidney filtration and proteinuria by targeting one of two different blood pressures in 840 patients with long-term kidney disease. There was a significant reduction in proteinuria in the patients with blood pressures controlled at the lower level as compared to the recommended level. Kidney filtration rates did not worsen as rapidly in the patients with the lower targeted blood pressure as compared to the recommended target blood pressure. Most patients who initially experienced a reduction in proteinuria tended to have only a slow decline in kidney filtration rates in the following months.

The effect of dietary protein intake on kidney function in women with normal or mildly abnormal kidneys
Article Abstract:
Women who have kidney disease might be able to keep it from getting worse if they reduce the amount of meat they eat, according to a study of 1,624 women. In women with kidney disease, the disease only became worse in those who ate meat protein rather than dairy or vegetable protein. Women with healthy kidneys had no adverse effect from any type of protein.

The blood pressure drug losartan appears to benefit the kidneys of people with type 2 diabetes who do not have high blood pressure
Article Abstract:
The drug losartan may delay the development of diabetic kidney disease in people with type 2, or adult-onset, diabetes, according to a study of 149 people. This is important because diabetes is the most frequent cause of kidney failure in the US. Losartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin receptor antagonists.
